Population growth: the level effect

This is the obvious one. More people means more homes to heat and light, more transport, and more industry to supply them, so total energy demand rises roughly with population. It also forces infrastructure spending: a bigger population needs more power plants, transmission lines, and distribution networks, which strains existing grids and requires heavy investment to expand. But population is the dull part of the answer. The interesting effects come from how those people live, not just how many there are.

Urbanisation: the intensity-and-mix effect

Urbanisation means people moving from the countryside into cities, and it's projected that a large majority of the world's population will live in urban areas by mid-century. This matters for two reasons beyond simple headcount.


 	It concentrates demandcities pack industrial, commercial, and residential energy use into a small area, which both raises local demand intensity and requires denser, more reliable grids and smart-grid technology to keep up. China's decades-long rural-to-urban migration drove exactly this kind of massive investment in urban energy infrastructure.
 	It shifts the type of energya city dweller uses energy differently from a farmer, leaning more on grid electricity and less on traditional fuels like burned wood or charcoal. So urbanisation tends to electrify demand, shifting the mix toward power rather than direct fuel burning.


The rising middle class: the appliance effect

As incomes rise, households cross a threshold where they start buying energy-hungry goods: air conditioners, refrigerators, and cars. Each of these is a step-change in per-person energy use, not a gradual drift. India's expanding middle class is the textbook case, with surging demand for electricity (air conditioning especially) and petroleum products as more families acquire cars. The key insight is that energy demand per person doesn't rise smoothly with income; it jumps as people climb onto each new tier of appliance ownership, and air conditioning in hot, growing economies is the single biggest driver to watch.

Aging populations: the counter-current

Not every demographic trend pushes demand up. In rich countries with aging populations (Japan being the standout), the picture is mixed: older people spend more time at home, which can lift residential energy use, and healthcare facilities are energy-intensive and grow with an older population. But aging societies also tend to have flat or shrinking populations and a strong push toward energy-efficient homes and appliances to manage costs, which dampens demand. So the developed-world aging story is one of slowing or even falling total demand, the opposite of the developing-world growth story.

Attitudes and policy: the mix again

Finally, who the population is shapes what energy it wants. Societies that are wealthier, older, and more environmentally minded (much of Europe) tend to push hard for renewables and strict efficiency standards, steering the energy mix away from fossil fuels even if total demand is flat. So demographics influence not just the quantity of energy but the political appetite for cleaner sources.

Sanity check: do the channels add up sensibly?

The framework predicts opposite trajectories for different parts of the world, and that's exactly what we observe. Developing economies (young, urbanising, rising incomes) show the three demand-boosting effects stacking together into fast-growing, increasingly electrified demand, which matches India and China. Developed economies (aging, already urban, efficiency-focused) show flat or falling demand with a green tilt, which matches Japan and Europe. Because the channels point in consistent directions within each group, the model holds together rather than contradicting itself.

So the line to give an interviewer: don't just count heads, demographics reshape energy through how many people there are, where they live, and how rich they are, and those three forces can pull total demand up in the developing world while flattening it in the rich, aging world!
