A Fermi question asks for a number nobody expects you to know. How many piano tuners work in Chicago? How many litres of coffee does this office get through in a year? The name comes from Enrico Fermi, who was known for producing usable estimates of quantities he had no data for, by breaking them into pieces he could reason about.
This is the skill underneath every quoting game on the platform. Before you can make a market on the number of bikes in Amsterdam, you have to have a number. Fermi Questions isolates that step: there is no bid, no ask and no opponent, just a question, a timer, and your estimate.
