Why the US
The United States holds more proprietary trading firms than any other country, and they are split between two very different centres. Chicago grew out of the CME and Cboe floors and still leans toward listed options and futures market making, while New York sits closest to the NYSE and Nasdaq and skews toward equities, ETFs and quantitative research. A second tier has grown up around them: Austin and Miami have both drawn established firms opening floors away from the old exchange cities, and Houston, Philadelphia and Kansas City each hold specialist desks. Most firms below are American headquarters; the rest are European and Asian firms that opened US offices to trade American hours.
