Jane Street Internship and Interview Process 2027: Rounds, Pay and How to Prepare

Jane Street hires quantitative traders in New York, London and Hong Kong, both as summer interns and as new graduates. This guide covers its 2027 internships, what its New York job postings pay, every stage of the trading interview process and how to prepare. Jane Street’s published trading process has no online test: it starts with phone interviews run by quantitative traders.

  • Trading roles
a Quantitative Trader Summer Internship and a full-time new-grad Quantitative Trader role, each in New York, London and Hong Kong.
  • When the 2027 internship postings went up
New York in early July 2026, London and Hong Kong a few weeks later, by early August. Jane Street has no deadline and reviews applications on a rolling basis.
  • Pay
the New York internship posting states a base salary of $300,000, the same figure as the New York new-grad posting. That is an annual rate, not what an intern earns in one summer. The London and Hong Kong postings give no figure.
  • Interviews
two or three phone or video interviews on probability, expected value and games, then a full day of interviews in a Jane Street office.

Jane Street 2027 internships and new-grad roles

Jane Street’s internships typically last 10 to 12 weeks between May and September: the Quantitative Trader internships run from May to August in New York and Hong Kong and from June to September in London. Jane Street also offers off-cycle internships at each office, timed around academic schedules.

  • What QT interns do
each intern is paired with experienced quantitative traders and works with two different mentors on projects taken from their day-to-day work. The internship includes intensive classes, workshops and team-based mock trading sessions.
  • Electives
each intern picks one of three: Machine Learning, Modeling, and Data Science; Algorithmic Trading and Market Microstructure; or Trading Strategy and Scenarios.
  • Who can apply
the postings ask for a strong quantitative thinker and require no specific degree or major. General programming experience is a plus, but no particular language is required. Jane Street has no GPA requirement and hires students in every year of study.
  • No finance background needed
the trading internship curriculum assumes no prior knowledge of finance, trading or markets, and Jane Street does not test trading candidates on finance or economics.
  • New-grad Quantitative Traders
new graduates take on real trading responsibility within weeks to months on the desk, alongside a year-long firmwide training curriculum.

When to apply

Jane Street posts its internships in the summer of the year before they start, in all three offices between June and August. For the 2027 internships, the Quantitative Trader postings went up in New York in early July 2026 and in London and Hong Kong a few weeks later, by early August. The two cycles before followed the same pattern. New-grad Quantitative Trader roles work differently: you can apply for those at any point in the year, as Jane Street has listed them in all three offices every month since July 2024.

  • No deadline
applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so apply as soon as you would be ready to interview within the next few weeks.
  • One application covers everything
Jane Street considers each application for all open roles and offices worldwide, and may suggest a different role that suits your background.
  • Replies
a person reads every application, and every applicant gets an answer, ideally within a week or so. Candidates reported waits from about 10 days to a few weeks in 2026.
  • Other offers
if you hold another offer with a deadline, tell Jane Street: it can often speed up its process.
  • Reapplying
wait at least a year after a rejection before you apply again, although this is not a hard rule.
  • Visas
sponsorship depends on the office and the role, so check with your recruiter.

What Jane Street pays interns

Jane Street’s New York Quantitative Trader internship posting states: “Base salary is $300,000.” The New York Quantitative Researcher internship posting gives the same figure, and the New York new-grad Quantitative Trader posting states $300,000 as base salary and adds that base salary is only one part of total pay, alongside an annual discretionary bonus. New York City requires every job posting, internships included, to state the minimum and maximum salary the employer expects to pay, where salary means the base annual or hourly rate. So $300,000 is an annual base rate, not what an intern is paid for one summer: the internship itself lasts 10 to 12 weeks.

  • How it has changed
the New York QT internship posting stated $250,000 for summer 2025 and has stated $300,000 since the posting for summer 2026.
  • Other New York internships
Strategy and Product states $250,000 (raised from $225,000 between July and September 2026), and Sales and Trading $225,000 (raised from $200,000 in the same period).
  • London and Hong Kong
none of Jane Street’s London or Hong Kong internship or new-grad postings shows a pay figure. The Hong Kong QT internship posting adds that Jane Street provides flights to and from Hong Kong and accommodation for the whole programme.

Overview of the Jane Street interview process

Jane Street’s trading interview process consists of phone interviews at the start and in-person interviews for the final stage, and every interview is run by a quantitative trader. For Quantitative Trader candidates the steps are:

  1. Application and CV screen
a person reads your application, and a recruiter explains the next steps if you are selected.
  2. Phone or video interviews
two or three rounds of 30 to 60 minutes each, on probability, expected value and games.
  3. Final round
a full day of about five interviews in a Jane Street office.

Does Jane Street have an online assessment?

Not for trading roles. Jane Street’s published trading interview process starts with phone interviews and mentions no online test, and its QT postings link to that process. Most Quantitative Trader candidates describe a live interview as the first step after the CV screen: in reviews posted in September 2026, two candidates described a live online technical interview with a trader as the first stage. One London QT intern candidate interviewed in November 2025 reported an online assessment before three interviews, without describing it.

Most “Jane Street OA” reports you will find online come from other Jane Street internships and programmes, not from the trading roles. Those do start with a test, so if you read about a Jane Street test, check which of these it was for:

  • Strategy and Product internship
an internship on strategic and analytical projects across the firm. Its process typically starts with an online assessment of multiple-choice and short-answer questions that takes about an hour. Candidates received it on HackerRank and say it covers order-book mechanics and basic probability.
  • Sales and Trading internship
an internship with the sales and sales-trading team that looks after Jane Street’s institutional clients. London candidates reported in February 2026 that the process starts with a written or online case-study task before the interviews.
  • INSIGHT
not an internship but a programme of about a week for women, transgender and gender-expansive students. It sends a HackerRank online assessment for each of its tracks: for the New York session of August 2026, applicants on all three tracks received theirs in late June 2026.
  • SEE
also a programme of about a week, for university students. The online assessment for its strategy and product track in June 2026 included a written explanation. A London SEE trading candidate who interviewed in December 2025 described a test with probability questions and a made-up game, asking for the best strategy and why.

The rest of each process is covered further down: the internships under Quant research, Strategy and Product, and Sales and Trading and the programmes under Jane Street student programmes.

Stage 1: Jane Street phone interviews

Jane Street calls you for phone interviews, and you can ask for Zoom if you expect a poor connection. Interviews take place on weekdays during local business hours. Many candidates describe the early rounds as Zoom or video calls.

  • Number of rounds
2026 reports from the US, London, Hong Kong and Canada split between two and three rounds before the final. A London QT intern candidate reported in August 2026 a single technical phone interview, mostly game theory, before the final day.
  • Length
candidates report 30 to 60 minutes per round.
  • First contact
a Hong Kong full-time candidate who interviewed in July 2026 started with a one-hour call on background and work eligibility, before two phone interviews.

What the phone interviews test

The rounds centre on probability and expected value, often built on dice, coins or cards, and game theory comes up as well. Game-style questions, such as betting games and picking a strategy, appear in the phone rounds and not only at the final, and the questions get harder from round to round. A New York candidate (September 2026) had two questions on expected value and how much to bid to take part in a game, and a US intern candidate (August 2026) was asked for the probability that a population of amoebas eventually dies out. A Hong Kong intern candidate reported in August 2026 being asked to make a market on the rolls of several dice.

  • Format
each question comes with follow-ups that change an assumption or a parameter, and you are expected to think out loud so the interviewer can follow how you reach your answer.
  • Behavioural questions
almost none. Candidates describe a short introduction or a brief question on why you are interested in trading.
  • Coding
QT candidates report no coding in the phone rounds.
  • Hints
interviewers look at how you approach hard problems, including how you take hints and respond to being wrong. Candidates in 2026 found the interviewers kind and ready to guide them when stuck.

for the phone rounds, use the Jane Street lessons on the phone interviews and on betting and strategy games in our Company Preparation Course, together with our Probability Betting Game, which trains their expected-value and betting questions.

Stage 2: the Jane Street final round

The final round is a day of interviews in a Jane Street office, and Jane Street books and pays for flights and hotel. Until mid-2024 its trading page also offered the final stage by video conference. By November 2024 the page said in-person only and listed the final-round topics.

  • Topics
a mix that may include problem solving, probability and statistics, coding in any language, data analysis and general interests. You can code in the language you know best, and OCaml is not required.
  • What candidates describe
about five interviews with lunch in the middle, one of them behavioural, and a strong emphasis on games alongside probability, game theory and problem solving.
  • Coding
reports differ. A US QT intern candidate reported in September 2026 one coding round at the final, on algorithms, while a Canadian QT candidate reported in January 2026 no coding at all.
  • After the final
you should hear back within a week, whether or not you move forward. Candidates report receiving rejections rather than silence.

In our course
for the final, use the Jane Street final round lesson in our Company Preparation Course together with our Make Me a Market game, for quoting and adjusting markets, and the Probability Betting Game.

Quant research, Strategy and Product, and Sales and Trading

Jane Street runs separate processes for its other internships. If you applied to one of these, expect a different first step.

  • Quantitative Researcher
research overlaps trading and software engineering, so the process mixes the two. Unlike QT, it includes a coding round before the final, which can be implementing a simple game and its rules, alongside probability and strategy questions. A New York QR intern who interviewed in September 2026 described a final day of one coding, one probability, two strategy or game rounds and one behavioural round.
  • Strategy and Product
after the online assessment come one or two video interviews, where a full-time member of the team sets hypothetical business scenarios and logic puzzles to work through together, then a day of in-office interviews. Candidates describe the first video round as about an hour with a business case and a brainteaser; a New York candidate (March 2026) was asked how to build a loyalty programme for rideshares. Only the New York posting suggests a date, encouraging applications by 15 November; the London and Hong Kong postings give none.
  • Sales and Trading
after the case-study task, candidates describe a first interview that mixes numerical or brainteaser questions with competency questions. A London candidate who interviewed in February 2026 had a first round with HR that included brainteasers, then a second round with the head of Sales and Trading.

How to prepare for Jane Street

Jane Street publishes its own preparation material, and its interviewing FAQ warns that not everything online about its interviews is true.

  • Probability & Markets guide
a PDF linked from Jane Street’s interviewing page, covering many of the core concepts in its interviews. Its sections run from counting, probabilities and expected value to confidence intervals, conditional probability, making markets and adverse selection. On adverse selection, the guide tells you to ask what a security is worth given that your order was filled.
  • Mock interview
the trading interviews page has a video in which a trader gives a candidate a three-part sample question and she talks through her strategies.
  • Myths
the guide lists four: that you must be very good at mental maths, that you must be very good at complicated maths, that a wrong answer means you fail, and that you should behave a certain way. Numeracy helps, but Jane Street will not judge you harshly for not multiplying two-digit numbers in your head within five seconds.
  • Tips from Jane Street’s trading interviews page
approach the problem methodically, communicate clearly, correct your mistakes and ask why. The interviews are more like a conversation than a quiz, with no complicated maths of the kind taught in higher-level college courses.

Expect more game theory than at most trading firms: candidates name it next to probability and expected value, in the phone rounds and again on the final day. Practise with the game theory questions in our interview question bank, and learn the theory behind them, from dominant strategies and Nash equilibrium to backward induction, in the Game Theory lesson of our Probability and Statistics Theory course.

Our Jane Street practice hub puts the training we recommend for Jane Street on one page.
